These are practical examples of where and how the tools of AI can be applied to create value, with projections as to the business value of AI for each workflow.

We have proved that the holistic application of AI to retailing will be utterly transformative, both from an operational and a social perspective. In the pages ahead, we set out how that will happen.

This is not about reducing headcounts to make efficiency gains. Retail is a business of human need, human connection, and human interaction. AI is about improving – rather than removing – the role of real people in the sector.

To further unpack what’s possible for retailers, we have developed ‘HIVE’, an AI diagnostic tool for retail businesses, which enables users to examine the potential for AI to improve every aspect of the retail P&L. It can be used as a guide for where to make the earliest investments.
